NCAA Injury Surveillance Program: Participation Simplified, Impact Multiplied

Smartabase, an industry-leading Human Performance Platform, has been certified for use with the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program (ISP). Now, college athletic departments can more simply and efficiently participate in this influential program and advance efforts to prevent and treat sports-related injuries.

Top collegiate Sports Medicine programs, such as the one at West Virginia University, have long been motivated to participate in the ISP because of the potential to improve the lives of student-athletes.

Vince Blankenship, Assistant Athletics Director and Head Athletic Trainer for West Virginia Football says, “As we look to find different ways to minimize the impact injuries have on athlete’s careers, the NCAA ISP program is important because it gives sports medicine professionals across the NCAA the ability to collect and review large quantities of injury data that will help inform injury prevention and treatment programs for years to come.”

But for many athletic programs, siloed Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Athlete Management Systems (AMS) have been a barrier to participation in the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program. Native system incompatibilities introduce the need for duplicate data entry and have precluded many time-deprived athletic trainers from participating in the past.

Because Smartabase serves as both an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Athlete Management System (AMS), athletic trainers can easily capture and centralize all their performance, health, wellness, and medical data in one platform. The flexibility of the solution and built-in integration with the NCAA ISP, managed by Datalys Center (an independent third party), reduces the administrative burden and allows trainers to efficiently provide the required sport-specific and detailed injury data.

“Smartabase has been a gamechanger for WVU, now that we are using a solution that is completely customizable,” says Zach Foster, Associate Director of Sports Medicine for West Virginia Football. “It fits the needs of our sports medicine and sports performance departments now and in the future. It gives us the ability to provide a better and more complete snapshot of our athlete through complete integration with nutrition, S&C, injury information, sleep, and recovery in one easy-to-read platform. This data will help guide and improve our standards of practice as an athletic training profession.”

For the NCAA ISP, the Smartabase certification means expanding the pool of athletic programs who opt-in to participate and provide highly valuable, granular, and accurate injury data. For Sports Science, this expands the possibilities of what can be studied at an aggregate or sport-specific level and improves the confidence in the resulting recommendations.

“The NCAA Injury Surveillance Program has succeeded over the past four decades thanks to the tireless efforts of athletic trainers at institutions nationwide. Since assuming the operational responsibilities of the surveillance program, we at the Datalys Center have been continuously committed to expanding the set of NCAA ISP-compatible EMR systems, enabling ATs at an increasing number of member institutions to more easily participate in the ISP,” says Avinash Chandran, Director of the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program at the Datalys Center. “I profoundly appreciate the support shown by EMR partners such as Smartabase in ensuring that ATs are able to contribute sports injury data at minimal added burden to their daily clinical practice.”
